What is Reiki?  Watch our video!

These are the Reiki precepts, advice given by Mikao Usui, founder of the system of Reiki used today. It was his strong belief that meditating on these ideals morning and night were key in being healthy in body and mind. As we move from a place of anger or worry into peace and acceptence we can feel our energy shift, our muscles relax and our breathing deepen. Humility, honesty and compassion are practices of integrity. When we are in integrity with ourselves and our life purpose it is easier to release patterns that can cause stress.

Reiki (ray-key) is a gentle bodywork method that can help us relax into balanced functioning on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels—regardless of our age or state of health. It is easy, natural and safe to use in any situation. Reiki treatment facilitates a deep level of relaxation and release of accumulated stress. This can result in the individual allowing their body, mind, and spirit to move toward harmony and balance. The term comes from the Japanese: “rei,” which translates into spiritual or universal, and “ki,” meaning the vital life force energy that flows through all living things. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) classifies Reiki as a form of energy medicine, and specifically a biofield therapy. Biofields are extremely subtle energy fields that are said to surround and permeate the human body.

The movement of Reiki energy can be compared to that of a river. A river's natural state is to flow, however, obstructions do happen. Trees fall, beaver dams are built, boulders redirect the flow. In much the same way, energy flows thru our bodies and trauma, illness, and injury can all cause our energy flow to become blocked. Reiki makes it easier to loosen the branches and stones of our metaphorical beaver dams. As the energetic flow is cleared of debris, physical discomfort and stress in these areas of congestion are relaxing into balance. With Reiki treatment, many people experience a sense of peace and contentment. Reiki helps ease anxiety and fear, the root cause of many sleep difficulties. Other benefits, such as feeling more motivated, less depressed, or experiencing relief from pain and the side effects of medications, radiation, or chemotherapy, vary from person to person. Reiki treatment supports and strengthens well-being and the body's natural ability to heal by encouraging relaxation and balance.

Reiki treatment is given with the practitioner’s hands gently touching or held just above the recipient who is reclining on a massage table or comfortably seated in a chair. There is no physical manipulation, ingestion or application of any substances. It does not require any special equipment and can be done anywhere as the recipient remains fully clothed. During treatment, many feel a tingling sensation, heat, or soothing cold, and/or experience a deep sense of relaxation. Some enter a meditative state or perhaps fall asleep. In general, people find Reiki to be relaxing and invigorating. Although simple to learn and relaxing to receive, Reiki is a powerful tool for balancing the body, mind and spirit.

Although Reiki research is underway, it is important to note that we are still learning how to study Reiki’s benefits. That being said, measurable improvements have been shown in heart rate, blood pressure and immune indicators. Participants also reported improvements in well-being, depressive symptoms and functioning. (Friedman RS, Burg MM, Miles P, Lee F, Lampert R. Effects of Reiki on Autonomic Activity Early After Acute Coronary Syndrome, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology; 2010 Sep 14;56(12):995-6)
