I have now been on my Psychiatry rotation for ~10 days and have experienced so much already. Prior to starting, I was hesitant about starting the rotation, mostly because I was unsure what to expect. Throughout life, you hear peoples’ negative views about psychiatric care and those receiving it and this starts to distort your perceptions. However, I have now realized, through experience that the patients being cared for are intelligent, extremely friendly and just looking for someone to talk to and listen to them. I feel very comfortable just sitting and talking with patients about everyday life. I also have witnessed the kindness and compassion of the staff and hope to one day carry these traits with me during my journey to becoming a physician assistant. I have greatly enjoyed my time in Psychiatry and have developed a greater respect and admiration for this field of medicine.

As a student, I get the opportunity to work in a variety of specialties with many diverse patients and clinicians. Although I was halfway through my clinical year, I still did not know exactly what to expect of my rotation at S’eclairer. I assumed there would be challenges, as I considered psychology to be different from the other fields I had rotated through. At S’eclairer I have learned that the modern view of medicine has become quite skewed. These days, patients want us to give them a magic pill to cure their ailments. Truth of the matter is that this method is not always going to fix the problem and may even make it worse. At S’eclairer the clinicians teach their patients that there is much more that embodies the healing process. They have patients work on their self as a whole, including their diet, exercise, behavior, relaxation and coping skills to name a few. In reality, these skills should be taught to all patients, not just psychiatric, as they are a vital part of our overall health. The staff at S’eclairer is caring and extremely patient. They practice what they preach which empowers them to be better clinicians and allows patients to further place their trust in them. After having the opportunity to see patients and personally partake in these skills and therapies, I can now take these new methods I’ve learned and apply them to my practice in any field, providing my future patients with the knowledge they need to live a happy and healthy life.
